I'm making an impact...

Well, maybe not that big of an impact.  About as much impact as those SETI@home or Cure Cancer screen savers.  Microsoft has a really cool program/event going on in conjunction to thier Windows Live Messenger program.  Basically any time you start a conversation using the Windows Live Messenger program, a portion of the ad revinue is given to the group of your choice.  There's not a whole lot of choices, but there's quit a few that I thought are good enough to support.  The American Red Cross. the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and the Susan G. Komen For The Cure are the groups that I'd like to support.  Too bad that I can only pick one at a time.

Ah, but this is where you come in.  I want you to go to the I'm Making A Difference site and learn how to do it.  It's really easy to do.  Just install the latest Windows Live Messenger  (if you haven't already) and then just add a code at the end of your name (like *mssoc for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society).  You'll see a logo like the image to the right of this paragraph next to your name.  That means that you are participating.  Easy.

So, what are you waiting for?  I already told you to go and do it!  Now Go!

The Science of Envrionmentalism

This story reminds me of a book that a friend of mine was reading and recommened to me.  I haven't actually read it yet, but it sounds quite interesting.  I can't even remember the title to give you a link to the book.

In any case, here's the interesting story about the science behind Global Warming.  "How one number touched off big climate-change fight at UW"

Mote, upset that Albright was broadly distributing e-mails about the issue, last week told Albright that he would have to let Mote preview any e-mails before sending them out, if he was tying his work to the state climatologist's office.

Mote's position as the state climatologist is a volunteer job that doesn't carry any official recognition or rules. Mote agreed to do the job several years ago, and his colleagues accepted it. The office collects and disseminates climate information and advises the state on climate-related issues.

When Albright refused Mote's ultimatum, Mote barred him from associating himself with the state climatologist's office.

Mote said Albright was sending out messages showing just his side of the story, and airing an analysis that hadn't gone through proper quality checks. As a representative of the climatologist's office, there needed to be standards, he said.

"I'm not trying to squelch debate by any means," Mote said.

But Mass said Albright was doing nothing wrong — simply airing his analysis and seeking feedback as he researched further.

"In all my years of doing science, I've never seen this sort of gag-order approach to doing science," he said.

Meanwhile, Nickels' office has switched to using the 30 percent figure announced by Hartmann, the department chair.

"Obviously we're going to use whatever number the scientists at UW say is accurate," Nickels spokesman Marty McOmber said.

I'm taking a "Wait and see" stance on the whole global warming thing.  Science of this type isn't exact and obviously will change.  Do we need to clean up our act?  Sure, it won't hurt that much and is typically better for us in the long run.  Is it the end of the world?  I really doubt it.

Update: There's a Danish Scientist who is looking at Global Warming correctly.  Here's something he said that I agree with:

"It is impossible to talk about a single temperature for something as complicated as the climate of Earth," said Andresen, an expert on thermodynamics. "A temperature can be defined only for a homogeneous system. Furthermore, the climate is not governed by a single temperature. Rather, differences of temperatures drive the processes and create the storms, sea currents, thunder, etc. which make up the climate".

He says the currently used method of determining the global temperature -- and any conclusion drawn from it -- is more political than scientific.

The site has an invalid title to the story as well.  No where does he say Global Warming is a myth.  At least not in any quotes they provide.

My next hack project

I love to take things appart and modify them (as long as it's not too risky).  My Photo Frame [2], [3] is just about complete, I just need to get a better frame (a shadow-box type of frame) instead of a regular flat one.  Of course, I'll post up pictures once I do get it complete.

My next project will be moding my Zune FM Tuner.  My wife got me the tuner thinking that it'd be good for me to use in my car.  I would use it, except that it pretty much sucks in it's current form.  My car stereo just doesn't get enough signal to really make it work as well as it needs to.  Well, some knowledeable chap opened his up and started poking around looking for a signal using his multimeter.  He found the antena block, soldered a wire to it and got an improvement in reception.  One guy at work says he's getting up to 80% better reception.  That seems like an acceptable outcome for a mod.  Although his initial attempt was just a wire dangling out he has an alternative solution as well.  So this is a hack with multiple options.  There's also an interesting picture of some antenna from an old wireless router (which I just happen to have in my car).

I'll post pictures and results when I'm done.
