DASH and Windows Mobile 6

The other day I upgraded my DASH phone to Windows Mobile 6.  I just want to say, cool.  It's a pretty nice operating system.  There are a few things that I had troubles with getting used to (and I'm still getting used to).  It's quite a nice operating system, and largely functions identically to the next one, but is a really good upgrade for the DASH.  It seems to function better now with WM6 than it did with WM5.  Here's a few differences and issues that i found between WM5 and WM6:

  • WM5 had a Headphone sound profile when you pluged in your hand's free device.  That isn't the case with WM6.  I far as I know it remains the same as you had it before you plugged it in.  I'm not sure how this applies to Vibrate and Silent profiles.  There's also no more Meeting profile.
  • T-Mobile and WM5 had a really good integration with their Voice Dialing software.  You depress the button on your Hands free headset and you say the name of the person you want to dial.  Bad part of that is that you had to set up each of the contacts you wanted to call that way with a voice name (you basically said the name, it recorded it and anytime you used the voice dialing it compared what you said with the saved voice name.  Well, that's gone in WM6.  This is a mixed bag.  The DASH WM6 includes Voice Command now, which has a greater feature set than anything in WM5.   You can pretty much control your whole phone with Voice Command.  Everything from calls to settings to listening to music to announcing meetings and mail.  The downside is, you can't use your hands free device button for calls.  The "record" button is holding down the home button.  Just hold it down and say "Call <first name> <last name>".  or "Play Media".  There are other "App" buttons, but I'm not sure what they would map to on the DASH.  Some say that App4 maps to the Control button (or power button).  The fact that you can't map to the hands free device button is a definate flaw.  Hopefully someone can address it.
  • T-Mobile WM6 image also includes a Music Plugin that if enabled, puts music controls on your home screen.  It includes all typical media controls as well as what's playing.  Very nice if you have a SD Micro card installed.  I use it frequently.

Overall, I really like the upgrade.  It's given my phone a new life and made it somewhat more usable.  If you have a DASH, go and get the update!  It's free!

On the other side of things, it seems that T-Mobile has fixed a hole in their service.  For the past 6 months, I've been getting data for free.  Basically, I could get all the data features on my DASH without being connected to any WiFi APs, basically through the network.  It was nice while it lasted.  Especially getting traffic data before driving.  However, it seems that they have finally locked that down.  I don't get email or have access to anything else.  T-Mobile does this the correct way.  If you don't have the data plan, then you don't get data, period.  Cingular (AT&T) does it the wrong way.  You have access to data regardless if you have a data plan.  But if you do access data service, like a web page, without a plan, they charge you crazy amounts.  I had a friend that navigated to one webpage while traveling and was charged $40 for that access.

Here's a few viewpoints on WM6:

Mr. Thompson tells Michael Moore what he thinks of him

Michael Moore has opened his big mouth again.  He's apparently challenged Fred Thompson (ex-congressman) to a debate on Public Health Care.  Mr. Thompson has replied to this challenge with a challenge of his own.  Check it out at Breitbart.  I think Mr. Thompson is right, Moore should check out the Mental Facilities in Cuba first hand.  Perhaps he can check in and stay for a few years.

An Apple Ops! - Vista more secure than MacOS?

I've told you all that the Mac commercials on tv, though some what funny, are all deceptive and filled with lies.  It's fine if you don't believe me just based off of one little post.  But how about if I show you proof?  Will you believe me then?  What about if the proof is from someone in the Mac Camp?

Here's the deal.  On Friday it was released that the MacOS and Quicktime has a huge security hole.  This issue affects ALL computers (including Windows XP, Vista) that have Quicktime Installed and browsers that support Java.  That include all you users with ITunes installed.  Navigate to the wrong website and you are Pwned (that's owned).  Meaning your computer is not yours any more.  All courtesy of Apple.

Well, ComputerWeek has an interview with the guy who discovered the flaw, republished by MacWorld.  Basically, he says that you'd be better off running Vista.

From your research on both platforms, is there a winner between Mac OS X 10.4 and Vista on security?

I have found the code quality, at least in terms of security, to be much better overall in Vista than Mac OS X 10.4. It is obvious from observing affected components in security patches that Microsoft’s Security Development Lifecycle (SDL) has resulted in fewer vulnerabilities in newly-written code. I hope that more software vendors follow their lead in developing proactive software security development methodologies.

So there you have it, straight from the flagship of Mac Fanboydom.  Vista is better than Mac OS.  Hat's off to the guys at Microsoft who worked so hard to get Vista secure.  It's a tough job being on the top.  Now if Microsoft would just capitalize on this in advertising.

Now, how to protect yourself from the flaw in Quicktime?  There are several options.  The first, disable Java in your browsers.  You can do this in IE by going to Start -> Control Panel -> Internet Options.  Select the Security Tab, Click on the Custom Level button.  Scroll down to where you see Scripting and select Disable for Active Scripting and Scripting of Java Applets.  Of course this will mean that any site that uses Java will not work.  The best way, in my opinion, is to remove QuickTime and iTunes from your computer.  Of course, this assumes that Apple doesn't do the dishonorable thing by not completely uninstalling when you try to uninstall.  I'd imagine that Apple will come out with a patch soon.
