My First Big Mouth Bass

I got my first Big Mouth Bass today.  I used a Texas Rigged Worm, a dark green one with purple and yellow specs in it (4" Yum Dinger Mardi Gras).  The water was dark, and I'm told that when the water is murky and dark you want to use darker colors.  I also tried a Sand colored worm with no luck.  But that might have been because of where I was fishing, not what.  It's pretty much identical to the Senko worms, so it should be fished like a Senko.  There's lot's of people giving their advice on how to fish with this type of worm.  Most of all, fish SLOW.

Also, if you have questions about how to fish (on any topic, not just bass), a good place to go is the forums at WashingtonLakes.com.  The guys there are very helpful and have helped me understand more about fishing in the last few weeks since the forums started than I ever knew.  Here's some rules of thumb when it comes to fishing for bass.

  • Throw topwaters only when the water is at least 60 degrees and the sun is not visible or bass are schooling
  • Wait 2 seconds before setting the hook with a topwater
  • Fish shallow early and late and on cloudy days - fish deeper on bluebird days
  • Fish tight to cover on sunny days - cover more water on cloudy days
  • Throw single hook lures around heavy wood cover - throw treble hook lures whenever you can get away with it.
  • Use a medium to light rod when fishing with treble hooks - use a stiffer rod for single hooks (worms, jigs, spinnerbaits)
  • Use dark colors at night
  • Use brighter colors in murky water and on dark, cloudy days
  • Use colors that don't stand out in clear water and sunny skies
  • Use bigger and noisier baits in murky water
  • Work a bait faster in clear water
  • Use unweighted baits only in calm, shallow water
  • Use heavier baits in the wind, deep water, or strong current
  • Big baits catch big fish, small baits catch more fish
  • Match the size of the bait that the fish are feeding on
  • Use 20# or heavier line for fishing jigs and worms where big fish are present - use lighter lines for all other purposes
  • Work a crankbait in about 1/2 the depth the bait is designed to run.
  • The lighter the bait, the more line you should leave out when casting.
  • The percent of how full you fill your baitcasting reel is about equivalent to the percentage of your maximum casting distance. For instance, if you fill your spool 100%, your maximum casting distance is 100%. If you fill it 80%, you can only expect to throw it 80% of its' potential. Likewise, if you fill it 50% full, you can likely throw it to the end, which is about half the distance you could get if it was full.
  • Bass prefer long and skinny over short and fat - they prefer snakes over turtles
  • Rising water is better than dropping water
  • West wind is better than an east wind
  • Cold fronts will shut the bite down when the water is cold
  • You can't catch em if you don't go!

Who really is causing Global Warming?

I wanted to get this up before I forget.  I heard about this on the Radio yesterday and got the article today.  It's an interesting read about how Climatology is really a new science and hasn't settled into a firm science yet.  Here's a couple of quick quotes to get you interested:
Politicians and environmentalists these days convey the impression that climate-change research is an exceptionally dull field with little left to discover. We are assured by everyone from David Suzuki to Al Gore to Prime Minister Stephen Harper that "the science is settled." ... The fact that science is many years away from properly understanding global climate doesn't seem to bother our leaders at all. Inviting testimony only from those who don't question political orthodoxy on the issue, parliamentarians are charging ahead with the impossible and expensive goal of "stopping global climate change."
Indeed, just as with any "new" technology out there, you shouldn't trust science on something that's just come out.  So many people want to wait on installing Vista, citing that they don't trust it to be stable enough, but jump on the bandwagon of Global Warming based on assurances of people not directly involved in the science of Climatology.  It's kind of like asking the cable guy if you should switch to Vista.
Climate stability has never been a feature of planet Earth. The only constant about climate is change; it changes continually and, at times, quite rapidly. Many times in the past, temperatures were far higher than today, and occasionally, temperatures were colder.
What's that he said?  The climate really never has been stable?  Blasphemy

Now, to satisfy my more sensitive readers who abhor my crudeness and lack of "understanding".  I've always said we need to take care of our planet.  It's not like we can just move to another one (although, there are plans for that, which bring up very interesting questions about the current attitude towards Global Warming).  There is one good thing that's going to come out of this, greater understanding of our world.  I just want everyone to let the scientists finish their work before trying to pass a bunch of laws that will likely be pointless.

New 50ft Monster CD

I came back from a family visit today and found the new debut CD from 50ft Monster, "Life After Debt".  I haven't been this excited to listen to a new CD since Underworld released "A Hundred Days Off".  Needless to say, I put it on my Zune right away.  I'll be listening to it constantly over the next few days, digesting, dysecting, forming my opinion.  Then I'll let you know.  I already know that from the 50ft Monster MySpace, I like several songs alot.  Bad Soul and Woman sound like the Neil and Bryan that I really enjoy.  Of course, I've never been that disappointed with anything these lads have done.

In any case, if you happen to be a Catherine Wheel or Rob Dickinson fan you really need to go and order this album.  Even if you like Talk Talk or Tim Friese-Greene you might like these guys (or at least Catherine Wheel).  Likely Bryan himself will send you the CD.
